“Missouri” (preview the track above!) is possibly\u00a0my favorite song on\u00a0the new album. Sean Cleary asked me if it was about the “channelization of the Missouri River.” Well, sort of,\u00a0but more broadly it just\u00a0tells\u00a0the old story of the perils\u00a0of human aspiration \u2014\u00a0Titanic\u00a0set in St. Joe (or a town a lot like it!). Here are a few more thoughts on what the lyrics of this song are about. \u2014Simon<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you’ve ever heard the beautiful folk tune, “Shandendoah,” then you know that “the wide Missourah” has a rich a history in song. I tried to capture some of that same homesick yearning in this tune.<\/em><\/p>\n

The song tells the calamitous story of a river town much like St. Joe \u2014 set “beneath the hills of Nodaway” \u2014 that got rich by developing\u00a0industry along the river shore.\u00a0<\/em>In the end the town’s fortunes are dashed\u00a0by\u00a0what could either be a natural or economic disaster \u2014 the lyrics don’t specify:<\/em><\/p>\n

“But the iron gears of fate\/Pause at no one’s gate\/And the winds from Dakota came rushing down.”<\/p>\n

St. Joe is a town filled with ghosts of the past. Whatever went on here a century ago is still so mysteriously vivid in the architecture and streets. And it’s <\/em>so<\/strong> ripe for\u00a0musical inspiration.<\/em><\/p>\n
